  • Checked out Vespers on Saturday and wow, what a beautiful place. My first Orthodox church experience (I come from a non-denominational church) and I have to say, it was great seeing how different people worship. The singing and (chanting?) was awesome. It was somewhat serious and weighty, which isn't something you get often from protestant mega-churches during worship - most the time it's swaying to pop love songs. But this experience reminded me of how serious our faith in Christ is to be taken, and I felt connected in a way that perhaps my ancestors were as they prayed and worshiped God. Very cool!

  • If you've never been to an Orthodox Church before, start with Vespers, Saturday evening, 6 p.m. (mostly). It's a unforgettable experience of coming into contact with the Holy. The icons and music are astonishingly rich and worshipful.

  • I would like to respond to a guy who wrote a very negative comment about the priest of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. I am not sure who he had in mind in particular, but I will tell you about my experience with St. Nick church, but first a little about my background. I come from an average atheist family from former Soviet Union. After collapse of USSR millions of former Soviet citizens became hostages of new reality. Our happy and used to be careless destiny, where education, medical insurance, guaranteed jobs, free apartments, paid retirement at 55... all of it disappeared overnight with new "democracy". We lost it all: Money in the bank saved for generations, our right to work, free benefits... We lost the hope for future. Millions of people became desperate... Great economy with the highest technology in the world came to an end. The former plants and factories that produced planes, ships, tractors, cars, farmacevtical drugs, etc. were sold for pennies to sole proprietors. The nation was robbed by Western governments and unethical proprietors. A lot of our people committed suiside or were killed in post-Soviet local civil wars or by a gang members that we never had in the past. I was lucky that the destiny brought me over to Portland. I was never overly religious person, but I made a choice to become Christian few years before collapse of my country. Probably that what saved me. When I came to the States 23 years ago, I was very lonely because I did not know anybody from Russia or former USSR. I started looking for Christian churches and found the Greek Orthodox Church on Glissan. It is a very large and beautiful church, but the priests were distant from people and I did not feel the connection. Finally I met great American people with Russian roots that took me once to a Sunday morning worship. I immediately fell in love with St. Nicholas Church. I found the place cozy, kind of intimate, beautiful and homey. I truly felt the presence of God there. The priest, Father George, appeared to be the most humble priest in the world. I know him now for 22 years. He is the kindest, humblest person on the world. When I wanted to christen/ baptize my son, I was concerned that I will not be able to afford the service, but Father George did everything for free. He told me then that this church is not about charging people for services, it is about helping people to connect with God, with Christ and save the soul. The church never puts a price tag on services... They only rely on voluntary donations... and if you can't donate it's ok'. Father George and the other church personnel are so kind. They helped me many times offering their support and services. Sadly to say, I am not the best Cristian follower in the world. I often work on Sunday and miss the service... but when my mother was dying from cancer, Farher George drove all the way to our home to talk and pray for my mother. Then he even helped me with burial and final services. I would be lost without his advice.
It is such a joy listening to Father G. on Sunday's worship. He is humorous when he is preaching or explaining the Bible. He also is teaching theology at PSU. Speaking of his take on Israel, we have never heard anything anti-Jewish, anti-Semitic. We pray about Israel and its people. Again he is very humble. He and his wife are very simple people... Dressed simple. He drives a small cheap car. The church is not the business to them... It's their belief and life. There are other orthodox churches in Portland Metro area, but, because of Father George and the warm and welcoming environment he created at St. Nicholas Church, I stick to this place. I would like to invite you to our Home of God. Welcome!

  • Message for Yonatan,I understand that u felt offended on how the priest reacted to ur question,in ur words..rude..what you shoud have done was called him right back at that moment & humbled urself & apologized to him & offered to hear his point of view, even tho u understand he was wrong for acting the way he did, member what Christ taught us,humbleness goes a long way,( and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted:. Matt 23:12 ) & also we must member never try to insult any1 in any way, even by a lil gester like Mr. Man of God,not only by our works will we be judged,( but give account to every careless word we say: Matt 12:36 ) according to Matt 16:18, there always has been a True Church on earth, the gates of hades will never prevail against the Church of Christ.I believe Christ completed His job on earth in establishing His Church, DO YOU? (( THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS THE ANCIENT ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH )) if I were you I would try to call bak that priest N make peace because... Matt 5:9
