my experience with the staff was miserable, the only attention I got was to show disgust at my want to learn of their religion and not being born into it. The sermons of teaching and befriending are lost to this group I was disgusted by the exclusivity and the way my questions were handled, the discussions of "show compassion to everyone you meet regardless of how they act or appear, everyone is a child of God" was thrown out the window as they kicked and shoved a homeless sleeping man from their (empty) parking lot shouting disgusting and vile things as they did it. I guess this church practices excluding others and respecting themselves. Never going again. I strongly recommend going down the street, churches here are a dime a dozen and I found a much friendlier one less than a block away.

So my fiance and I decided to take our daughter to the nearby church so she could ride her bike in the parking lot. It was pretty cool because there was a pretty nice little playground there. Excitedly, she rides her bike quickly over to the playground and gets off her bike to run to the structure. Not 5 minutes later, we're getting kicked out since we weren't members of the congregation. Our daughter was crying and the jerk didn't even care. I was so upset. So the people who profess the importance of family and spending time together (church goers) want to kick out a little family who wasn't bothering anyone, and make a 3 1/2 yr old cry. I was so mad, my blood was boiling. What a disgrace! Forget this place. This is exactly what division looks like. I thought religion was supposed to be inclusive, not create a division. I'm a federal employee, a veteran of the Army who served to support OIF, so your little church could actually survive.

  • Friendly, caring people. Outstanding choir. Serious about being in mission to the poor.

  • We have attended FUMC since we moved to Portland nearly 20 years ago--two twenty-somethings taking a risk on a new city. We are now members, and our children are active in the amazing programming offered at the church. We love our church home, its openness, accepting and love for all individuals. The music, ministry and connectiveness we experience enriches our family's life.

  • After church "shopping" for over a year, my wife and I chose FUMC for everything it provided within the sanctuary (amazing choir, organist, thoughtful sermons, reconciling ministry, inclusion of children and families) and possibly more for all it does outside of the sanctuary (onsite shelter for homeless families, advocacy for social justice issues, welcoming of opinions from all points on the "religious spectrum", and their great connection to camp retreats). While I'm far from the most engaged of members, I'm proud to be a part of this congregation and all they represent.
